CHAPTER FIVE

Sound Design
“Aaaaaarrrrrrrggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!””
The Wilhelm Scream aka Man Getting Bitten by Alligator

In Chapter Five we turn our attention to one of the most powerful weapons in a short form content creators arsenal: sound design. Although sound design can radically alter the mood of a sequence, audiences rarely take notice of sound design while consuming filmic content. Given how one of our main goals is to quickly evoke a feeling in the audience without them knowing how we did it – and thus without feeling manipulated – sound design is extremely useful to us.

Some of the more important things sound design can do for our work are:

  • Helping to motivate an individual edit.
  • Adding additional layers of meaning and psychological intensity to a scene.
  • Motivating and signaling shifts in tone or time and space.

“I had an epiphany a couple of years ago when I realized that I’m not just creating a collection of sounds but instead I am actually creating parts to a story. When I realized that what I was doing was telling a story through sound, things got really clear for me.”

“At the end of the day, the “not good enough” part is the thing you bang on. I am not happy until a trailer sings. It has got to sing for me. It is like a song that builds and builds and builds and then it holds this energy and I am not happy until it does so.”
